VFiles has selected innovative streetwear tailor Dapper Dan as a runway mentor for its upcoming New York Fashion Week show. Now in its 9th season, the show has featured the likes of Naomi Campbell, Virgil Abloh, and Pat McGrath as mentors in the past.
Known for giving designer fabrics a streetwear spin, Dapper Dan’s legacy as an iconic Harlem tailor in the 1980s and 1990s is still strong and impactful today. Back in May, he made several headlines after Gucci revealed a jacket that blatantly mimicked one of his vintage pieces. A new generation of streetwear designers, like New Jersey’s Imran Moosvi, are also keeping Dan’s tradition alive.
“As hip-hop grew, the rappers got more diverse in style, and I’m seeing that reflection in the upcoming styles in the streets now, which in turn has influenced the bigger brands,” said Dapper Dan in a statement, according to Business of Fashion.
Every year, VFiles invites industry experts and influencers to guide designers, makeup artists and stylists for its group runway show. Catch Dapper Dan at the New York Fashion Week show September 6th.
